What is effective marketing? If you are able to find a strong differentiator and set yourself apart from others, then you are successful.
My wife and I are both real estate agents in a fairly average and ordinary neighborhood. We attend church in the local area, and have 12 other members of the congregation who are also real estate agents.
Dilemma: So, who gets the referral when everyone knows everyone? Do women give women referrals? Do men only work with men? Do the beautiful female real estate agents get all the luck? (sure, why not).
We have decided to provide service in a different way. Baking and delivering homemade bread. (My mother-in-law would be shocked once again). We found a VERY SIMPLE recipe to make bread from scratch, without even my bread maker that I gave away 10 years ago. I remember mom making about 8 loaves of bread twice a week. My friends would all find an excuse to come over after school and test the warm bread with homemade strawberry bread. Yummy...
Who can resist the smell of warm, fresh bread, just out of the oven? We are baking 2-4 loaves at a time, and delivering it in the evenings and on weekends. In fact, we just delivered 4 loaves tonight! What is your address, we will bring by for you, too.
Here is the other good part. We are in escrow with an investment house for a member of our congregation- that was a result of service provided, including our fresh bread. So, why did the family choose us when there were others to pick from? We believe it was due to the service we provided.
My advice: it is very good to give, and sometimes you do receive in return.
